Newcastle United 1 - 5 Manchester United: Match Report
Manchester United managed to complete the double against Newcastle, adding another five goals to their tally against a side we beat 6-0 at Old Trafford earlier this year. Sadly (or amusingly, depending on your point of view) King Kev's return to Tyneside hasn't turned the barcodes' season around. Newcastle started the game off well, with Milner giving Evra a bit of a tough time early on in the game. Owen had a penalty appeal correctly turned down by Chris Foy, as replays showed Ferdinand got the ball. Shortly afterwards, the reds made the inevitable breakthrough when Ronaldo, after some clever footwork, put in an inviting cross to the far post for an unmarked Rooney to tap in. Tevez had a great chance to double the lead after Nani put in a great cross from the right, but his effort went just wide of the post. However, Newcastle's reprieve was short-lived. A brilliant through-ball from Carrick put Ronaldo through on goal just before half-time, and he converted with ease.
Evra was replaced by O'Shea at half-time, whilst Ronaldo moved into a more central role, and Rooney switched to the left. It didn't take very long for Ronaldo to get his second of the game and 21st Premiership goal of the season. Some rather sloppy defending from Newcastle allowed Ronaldo to get through on goal once again, and he managed to get round the keeper and apply another good finish. Ronaldo was denied a chance to complete his second hattrick against Newcastle after being replaced by Saha. Scholes came on a few minutes later to replace Vidic, who picked up a knock. Brown reverted to the centreback position and Fletcher played the last fifteen minutes as a rightback. It was perhaps no surprise that United conceded from a corner shortly after Vidic's departure. Beye managed to latch on to the ball from just six yards out, and give the miserable Geordies something to cheer about. Nonetheless, Newcastle's sliver of hope was completely extinguished just minutes later by Rooney's second of the night. United had won a corner after Scholes made a good run into the box only to see his header tipped over the bar. From the ensuing corner, Smith only managed to clear the ball as far as Rooney, who curled in a wonderful shot from just outside the box. In injury time, the reds managed to add insult to injury as Rooney unselfishly found Saha inside the box, and the Frenchman controlled the ball well before seeing his right-footed effort find the back of the net. The game ended 1-5, and Manchester United managed to close the gap to three points with Arsenal having dropped two points against Birmingham.
